CLARENDON, Jamaica:

As harsh economic conditions set in, desperate caregivers have reportedly resorted to abandoning their loved-ones at the May Pen Hospital.

Mayor of May Pen, Councillor Scean Barnswell, says the situation is affecting the delivery of health care at the hospital.

He says on a recent visit to the hospital he was made aware by personnel that there are 10 elderly persons who have been abandoned at the health facility.

According to him, some of these elderly patients have been at the hospital for up to three years.

The May Pen Mayor says the Clarendon Parish Council is now trying to address the problem.

He notes that it has been suggested that the abandoned elderly patients be transferred to the May Pen Infirmary.

However, he says the facility is full.
