United States law enforcement authorities have arrested an American woman living in Belize for her involvement in a scheme to defraud the US government through an adoption scam.

The US Department of Justice said 53-year-old Mary Mooney, was arrested at her San Pedro apartment during a pre-dawn operation.

Mooney, who has been identified as the former Executive Director of International Adoption Incorporate, is charged with three other Americans for carrying out the adoption scheme for five years.

They are accused of violating the laws relating to the adoption of Ethiopian children by using US parents.

The group allegedly submitted fraudulent contracts of adoption to Ethiopian courts to secure adoption decrees and presented these to the US Embassy in Ethiopia to obtain visas for the children to travel to the US.
