Officials in the United States (US) and Mexico today confirmed that Joaquin Guzman, one of the world's most wanted drug barons, has been arrested in Mexico.

Reports say Guzman, who is believed to be the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, was held without incident at a hotel in the resort town of Mazatlan in a joint operation carried out by US and Mexican law enforcement personnel.

Guzman, who is also known as ‘El Chapo’ or ‘Shorty’, had been on the run since 2001 when he escaped from a high-security prison in a laundry basket.

He is wanted in the US on federal drug trafficking charges and a US$5 million reward was being offered for information leading to his arrest.

Forbes magazine has estimated Guzman's fortune at US$1 billion.
