Forest Act to be reviewed

Published:Saturday | February 22, 2014 | 6:22 PM

Land Minister Robert Pickersgill has announced that a revision of the country’s Forest Act is to commence shortly.

According to Pickersgill, the revision is aimed at making the legislation more broad-based and current and to allow the Forestry Department to have a greater impact in carrying out its mandate.

He said the revised act will also provide the necessary legal framework to support the provisions of the country’s new forest policy that is now being drafted.

The forest policy will outline measures to improve transparency and accountability in the management and use of Jamaica’s forest resources and expand the jurisdiction of the Forestry Department among other things.
