Probe under way in Santa Cruz jailbreak

Published:Sunday | February 23, 2014 | 10:52 AM

Assistant Commissioner (ACP) Derrick Knight says an investigation has been launched into yesterday’s jailbreak at the Santa Cruz police lock-up in St Elizabeth.

He says the probe, which is being conducted by the Inspectorate of the Constabulary, will determine if there was any deviation from force policy.

ACP Knight warns that disciplinary action will be taken if any member of the police force is found to be culpable.

The police say four men escaped from the Santa Cruz lock-up by cutting away the grill. Two of them, Ryan Thomas and Entley Smith, have been charged with murder while the others, Nicolas Mason and Elrado Turner, have been charged with robbery and housebreaking respectively.

The police are asking anyone with information on the men’s whereabouts to contact the Santa Cruz police at 966-2289, the Black River police at 965-2232, Crime Stop at 311 or 811, police emergency number 119 or the nearest police station.
