Russia Parliament approves use of military in Ukraine

The Upper House of Parliament in Russia has approved a request by President Vladimir Putin for Russian forces to be deployed in Ukraine.

The decision, which was taken during a special parliamentary sitting, comes on the heel of a warning by United States President Barack Obama that there will be costs for any Russian intervention in Ukraine.

Kiev has reacted angrily to days of military movements in the Crimea area, accusing Moscow of trying to provoke the new government into an armed conflict.

Ukraine’s interim President Olexander Turchynov has called an emergency session of his security chiefs.

However, in asking Parliament to approve the deployment of Russian forces in Ukraine, Putin gave the assurance that they would be used until what he called the normalisation of the political situation in the country.
