Government announce cyber security initiatives

The government has announced plans to develop a cyber security strategy and policy as well as a cyber emergency response team for Jamaica.

State Minister for Technology Julian Robinson, who made the announcement, says the two initiatives will form part of a framework intended to safeguard the country against cyber attacks.

Noting that these kinds of crime can bring the country to a standstill, Robinson says there has to be an organised mechanism to deal with the threats they pose.

He says while Jamaica may not be seen as a target for cyber crime, there are unscrupulous persons who can and will hack into the country’s technology framework just to prove their point.

Robinson, who was speaking in Kingston on Thursday, says the Organization of American States is providing assistance for both initiatives.
