42 arrested for electricity theft since January, says JPS
The Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) is reporting that since the start of the year, 42 persons have been arrested for stealing electricity.
The company says seven of the 42 arrests took place last week Wednesday, in St Catherine, arising out of operations conducted in Bog Walk, Goulbourne Lane and Commodore.
It says 12 summonses were issued for perpetrators to appear in court.
The JPS also says its teams have removed more than 26,000 ‘throw ups’ mainly from Kingston and St Andrew, St Catherine and St Elizabeth.
Meanwhile, JPS says its crews have found a high rate of theft from streetlights.
The company says of the 62 streetlights investigated during operations, 48 were found to have been breached by illegal connections, which in turn resulted in malfunctioning streetlights.
Last year, 1,246 persons were arrested for the theft of electricity.
