Jamaica must empower its women, says 'Babsy' Grange

Published:Saturday | March 8, 2014 | 2:32 PM

Opposition Spokesperson on Gender Affairs Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange says Jamaica must empower its women through employment opportunities and institutional support.

In her message to mark International Women’s Day, Grange says this will enable Jamaican women to withstand some of the many challenges they face.

She says these challenges include an increase in the number of reported rape cases, inequality in sexual relationships which affects the woman’s ability to negotiate the use of a condom and inequality in the salaries paid to men and women.

Grange says despite political social and age differences, Jamaican women must work together and continue to highlight these injustices until they are removed from the path to equality with men and justice for all genders.
