FOOTBALL: Netherlands star to miss World Cup, knee injury

Netherlands midfielder Kevin Strootman will miss this summer’s World Cup in Brazil after tearing a cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing for club side Roma.

The 24-year-old Strootman was substituted after he was injured during the Italian team's defeat at Napoli.

Strootman, who joined the Serie A side in a £15-million transfer from PSV Eindhoven last summer, tried to continue after going down in the early stages of yesterday’s loss against Rafael Benitez's side.

A statement from Roma said tests showed Strootman has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and there could also be damage to the meniscus.

The club says he will undergo surgery in the next few days.
