Opposition blasts government over Riverton landfill fires

Published:Monday | March 17, 2014 | 9:25 AM

The Opposition is accusing the Government government of negligence regarding the Riverton landfill.

The Local Government Spokesman, Desmond McKenzie and Environment Spokesman, Dr Andrew Wheatley say the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), National Environment & Planning Agency (NEPA), and the Ministries of Health and Environment must take immediate steps to ensure that the situation at Riverton is brought under control and does not recur.

According to McKenzie, the frequency with which fires are breaking out at the landfill is disturbing, and distressing for residents.

Wheatley says the ineffectiveness of the Ministry of Climate Change and the Environment has again been revealed.

He says the Government must ensure that environmental regulator, NEPA, enforces the standards for the operation of the landfill, and hold the NSWMA accountable when it fails to meet those standards.
