Police to revamp evidence storage protocols - DPP

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn says her office and the Police High Command will be revamping the protocols relating to the storage of items pertaining to cases before the courts.



She was responding to an Editorial in The Sunday Gleaner regarding the grave investigative and procedural incompetence on the part of the police and prosecutors during the just concluded Vybz Kartel murder trial.



It was revealed during the case that critical pieces of evidence went missing or were tampered with.



Llewellyn also admitted that the prosecutor who was first assigned the case appeared to have borrowed a disc from the police which was not a copy.



She explained that the prosecutor died and her team was unable to find the disc.



In that regard, the DPP says her office will ensure that no original material is released.



Llewellyn says she has been in touch with the high command and a case review in respect of protocols and procedures is already in train.



She says protocols will be revamped and new ones set to ensure the integrity of the systems in place at her office.



The DPP says despite the inefficiencies in the case, the work of the police cyber experts, other police personnel and the prosecution team must not be overlooked.
