KINGSTON, Jamaica:

Local Government Minister Noel Arscott says the government is not in a position to have commercial users of the Riverton City landfill registered to use the site.

Head of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) Richard Thompson has suggested that the landfill be properly secured and identification cards given to those wishing to enter the facility.

Arscott says in order for users to be registered, the property would have to be properly secured.

He says while that would be ideal, there is no budgetary support for such a move.

He reiterates that the configuration of the property makes it difficult to be properly secured.

The Local Government Minister says the final cost to deal with Sunday's fire at the landfill should be ready by next week.
