Consultations necessary before appointment of new Tivoli Commissioner – church group

The Jamaica Umbrella Groups of Churches is urging the government to ensure the necessary consultations take place before the naming of a new member of the panel for the Tivoli Commission of Enquiry.

On Tuesday, the Office of the Prime Minister disclosed that the Governor General had accepted a request from Queens Council Velma Hylton to be excluded from the commission following concerns about her selection.

The church group said while it holds Hylton in high regard, if she were to act as a commissioner in the enquiry the results would have been met with cynicism.

The opposition had criticised the Government for selecting Hylton to the three-member panel because she had made comments it saw as prejudicial against Tivoli Gardens residents during an enquiry into a similar operation in 2001.

The Church Group says all must be done to preserve the integrity of the Commission of Enquiry by ensuring that the process and outcome enjoy the confidence of most, if not all citizens.
