A Luger 9mm pistol and one 9mm cartridge were seized along Beeston Street, Kingston, on Friday, March 21. One suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the find.

Reports received from the Kingston Central Police are that about 8:34 p.m., police personnel were on patrol when two men were seen acting in a suspicious manner. Upon seeing the police, they opened gunfire at the lawmen, resulting in damages to several vehicles in the vicinity and the service vehicle in which the police were travelling.

The police pursued the men who tried to escape and later accosted one of the men, who was identified as 24-year-old Randy Blake of Kingston. Blake was found in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition and was later charged with the offences of shooting with intent, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and malicious destruction of property.

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington is commending the officers for the level of professionalism and commitment they demonstrated in light of the imminent danger.

“Once again, the police demonstrated respect for human life. Although their lives were at risk, they utilised the training they received in an effective manner and arrested the suspect without any loss of life. This supports the fact that the police have no intention to kill armed suspects if they surrender peacefully,” Ellington said.

The Police High Command will continue to insist that all members conform to the rules of engagement outlined in the Use of Force and Human Rights Policy, and to keep the strategic priority of upholding human rights at the center of day-to-day operations.

The Central Police are appealing to anyone with information relating to the incident to contact their Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) at 922-5076. Persons may also contact Crime stop at 311, the Police emergency 119 number or the nearest police station.
