12-y-o student pleads guilty to slapping, choking teacher
A 12 year-old primary school student in Trinidad and Tobago has pleaded guilty to slapping and choking a teacher and is to be sentenced next month.
The guilty plea comes as education officials in the twin-island republic are trying to deal with a wave of school violence, including a recent fight involving 10 female students at a secondary school in the capital Port-of-Spain.
The court heard evidence that the 12-year-old student was seen by his 32-year-old teacher throwing bottles at other students during recess and was reprimanded.
When the teacher tried to confront the male student again later that day, it’s reported that he slapped her several times and choked her.
During his court appearance on Friday, the student told the presiding magistrate he was angry because other students had earlier provoked him about his mother who died three years ago.
