Public Defender to address issues surrounding Tivoli Enquiry

Published:Monday | March 24, 2014 | 8:39 AM

The Public Defender Earl Witter is to host a press conference this morning to discuss the impending commission of enquiry into the 2010 police-military operation in Tivoli Gardens.

Among the issues Witter says he will address is the appointment of the commission, its composition and terms of reference and what he says is the posture of the Government and the Opposition on the matter.

Weeks of wrangling between the Government and the parliamentary Opposition over the appointment of Velma Hylton as one of the commissioners ended this week when the attorney asked to be excluded from the process.

Her replacement has not yet been announced.

A date has also not yet been set for the start of the enquiry.

This morning's press conference is scheduled for 10:30 at the Public Defender's Office on, 78 Harbour Street in downtown, Kingston.

Seventy-three people were killed in May 2010 when members of the security forces went into Tivoli Gardens to arrest then fugitive Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke on an extradition warrant.
