Clarendon PC to begin rebuilding plans for May Pen Market

Published:Thursday | March 27, 2014 | 6:52 PM

Community Programme Coordinator at the Clarendon Parish Council Ramona Lawson says the council will soon develop a plan for rebuilding shops which were destroyed in a fire at the May Pen market early this morning.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze.

Lawson says the burnt out area of the market will be cordoned off.

The fire destroyed about 63 shops and has left shop owners pondering their next move.

Assistant Superintendent of the May Pen Fire Department, Orette Barnswell, says a call was received shortly after 2 o'clock this morning that some shops in the market were on fire.

The Spanish Town Fire Department had to be called in for assistance.

The fire destroyed machinery, stoves, fridges, restaurants and other commercial equipment.

The damage is estimated to be in excess of $30 million.
