JLP caretaker named for East Portland

Jamaica Labour Party Leader (JLP), Andrew Holness has officially named minority leader in the Portland Parish Council, Derron Wood, as the party’s caretaker for East Portland.

Wood will replace Patrick Lee, who resigned in 2012 because of illness.

He was presented to Labourites at the opening of the party’s East Portland constituency office yesterday evening.

Holness described Wood as a hard worker who is loved by the people.

Noting that the JLP’s last victory in East Portland was in 1980, the JLP leader expressed confidence that Wood could turn around the party’s fortunes in the seat.

According to Holness, the evidence is clear that Wood is determined to win the East Portland seat, as shown by his decision to renovate the constituency office.

Wood served as deputy mayor during the period 2007 to 2012, when the JLP trounced the People’s National Party in Parish Council elections by seven seats to two.
