Pig farmers warn of possible price increase

Published:Friday | April 4, 2014 | 10:12 AM

Consumers are being warned there’s likely to be an increase in the price of pork soon.

President of the Jamaica Pig Farmers Association, Delroy Manya, spoke with the Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre following the latest consultation held at the College of Agriculture Science and Education in Portland yesterday.

He says over the last 18 months pig farmers have been absorbing a significant increase in the costs of inputs such as feed, electricity and water.

Manya says this has resulted in some pig farmers having to reduce their production and cut back on the use of feeds.

He says the executive of the association will have discussions regarding the increase, which could be in the region of four and a half to five per cent.
