St Vincent main opposition against state funded healthcare for parliamentarians

St Vincent’s main opposition New Democratic Party says it will not support a proposal by Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves that the state pays for medical expenses for parliamentarians.

Prime Minister Gonsalves, who is also Minister of Finance, made the announcement in Parliament last week.

He made the statement after opposition legislator St Clair Leacock said he had travelled to Barbados for medical treatment and had used his December salary to pay for retinal surgery.

Prime Minister Gonsalves said medical insurance for legislators had been discussed by past and present government but that the talks got nowhere.
