Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has expressed profound sadness at the passing of Arthur 'ANR' Robinson, former Prime Minister and president of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

In a statement this afternoon, Simpson Miller expressed condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

She said Trinidad and Tobago has lost a giant of a human being, a distinguished leader and Statesman, and the Caribbean, a true son of our regional community.

Simpson Miller said ANR Robinson was one of the Caribbean's most accomplished leaders who fought vigorously and advocated strongly for the sovereign rights of his countrymen and the Caribbean people.

ANR Robinson served as Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago from 1986-1991 and later as president, 1997–2003.
