Education ministry recruiting math specialists
The Ministry of Education is recruiting math specialists for the upcoming 2014/2015 academic year, to be placed in several schools across the island.
Minister of Education, Ronald Thwaites, says the Government will have to find more than $150 million to get the programme underway.
And he says it will eventually cost $1.2 billion over three years.
The programme will see the specialists working as coaches and resource teachers in primary and secondary schools.
Thwaites says the specialists are crucial, as students are not mastering numeracy, which is evident in the performance of the Grade Four Numeracy Test and later in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) math results.
Thwaites was addressing the launch of the Butterkist National Primary Schools Mathematics Competition, in New Kingston, yesterday.
