JLP concerned about frequency of Riverton fires, impact on health

Deputy Opposition Spokesman on the environment, Councillor Duane Smith, is raising concerns about the latest fire at the Riverton landfill in Kingston.

Smith says the smoke coming from the dump this time around could have a greater impact because most residents from the neighbouring communities are home or participating in activities to mark the Easter holidays.

He urged the National Solid Waste Management Authority, the Jamaica Fire Brigade and the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development to move swiftly to secure these communities from the

potential public health threats.

Smith argued that this should be a priority given the frequency of the fires at the dump and the serious threat it pose to the health of residents and those persons who work in the surrounding communities.
