Riverton fire contained - ODPEM

Published:Sunday | April 20, 2014 | 10:48 AM

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) says the fire at the Riverton dump in Kingston has been contained.

Notwithstanding, the agency is appealing to members of the public to avoid the area as much as possible or to exercise extreme caution to guard against undue exposure to the smoke coming from the dump.

According to residents, the problem began yesterday when several small fires were observed at the dump. In a statement yesterday afternoon, ODPEM said the fire extended across 15 acres of the landfill, but was confined to just one section.

The ODPEM says, however, that despite the water restrictions across much of the Corporate Area, the situation remains under control and that national and parish response mechanisms remain on standby should conditions escalate.
