Government owes billions to suppliers, says Shaw

The Opposition spokesman on finance, Audley Shaw, has disclosed that the government has built-up $47.87 billion in arrears.

Shaw has been pressing the government to provide data on its outstanding bills.

This afternoon he disclosed that he has been given a document bearing the figure, but remains dissatisfied.

Shaw said he believes the amount owed could be higher as data from all Ministries, Departments and Agencies were not included in a document which was given to him late last night by the finance ministry.

According him, by his estimates the actual build-up of arrears could be as high as $52 billion.

Shaw stressed that until a true picture is given of the arrears, the credibility of the Budget will be in doubt.

The opposition spokesman on finance said the delay in paying outstanding bills is affecting those who do business with the government.
