KINGSTON, Jamaica:

The Transport Minister, Dr Omar Davies, is maintaining that the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) will not relent in its efforts to reform the corporate area transport system.

His comments follow Saturday night’s gun attack on a JUTC bus in Portmore, St Catherine, resulting in the injury of a female passenger.

In condemning the attack, Davies said the police and the JUTC would be ramping up their efforts to enforce the law and to protect commuters as well as company property.

The minister also described the shooting of the bus as nothing but an act of terrorism.

In recent weeks several JUTC buses have been attacked and damaged by people against the changes to the transport regime.

Under the new regime, the JUTC has reclaimed several routes, reduced the number of sub-franchise licensees, and restricted rural bus operators from picking up and letting off passengers in the corporate area.
