NEPA meeting to determine NSWMA's fate
Officials of the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) are meeting at this hour to determine what action to take against the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) for failure to comply with an order last week.
NEPA had served an enforcement notice on the NSWMA, insisting, among other things, that the agency extinguish an ongoing fire by Friday and cease the discharge of smoke at the Riverton landfill.
NEPA had also demanded that the NSWMA submit, within 14 days of the notice, a detailed report of the incident.
It is not clear whether the report has been submitted, however, smoke has still been rising from the dump.
NEPA’s chief executive officer, Peter Knight reported a short while ago that the agency has not yet decided on what action it will take.
In March, the National Resources and Conservation Authority had granted the NSWMA two environmental permits for solid-waste treatment and disposal and hazardous waste storage, transportation, treatment or disposal facility at Riverton.
