An elderly woman was rushed to hospital yesterday afternoon after she suffered cuts and bruises to her right leg and upper body from getting her foot stuck in a manhole cover in the vicinity of West Street in Port Antonio, Portland.

According to several eyewitnesses, the woman was walking along West Street towards a farm store, when her right leg slipped through the grille cover.

The woman reportedly hit her head on the concrete pavement.

A fire team managed to free the woman’s leg and place her into a nearby taxi to be taken to hospital.

An alleged eyewitness blamed roadwork in the town saying there was nowhere for pedestrians to walk.

West Street has been dug-up to replace and install water and sewerage pipes as part of a $1.8 billion water, drainage, and sewerage project.

The eyewitness is urging the contractor to put in place measures to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
