ODPEM raises awareness with Hurricane Preparedness Month activities

Published:Saturday | May 3, 2014 | 12:47 PM

With the 2014 hurricane season is less than a month away, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is taking steps to raise awareness among Jamaicans.

This is being done through a number of activities planned to mark Hurricane Preparedness Month, which is being observed from May 1-30 under the theme ‘Disasters are a reality, make preparedness your responsibility'.

Senior Director for Preparedness and Emergency Operations at ODPEM, Michelle Edwards says the objective of these activities is to promote key messages and actions that will strengthen preparedness and response at the national level.

Edwards notes that over the last 12 years the average impact of hurricanes, tropical storms, flooding and landslides is approximately three per cent of Gross Domestic Product.

She urged families to craft a household disaster plan that will identify, among other things, what are the actions to be taken if they become separated in a disaster.
