St Lucia’s Opposition criticises $1.2 billion Budget

Published:Saturday | May 3, 2014 | 1:38 PM

St Lucia’s Opposition Leader Dr Gail Rigobert has blasted the $1.2 billion Budget presented by the Kenny Anthony administration this week, saying it does not contain firm policies to address the country’s financial problems.

Rigobert says there is no single strategy aimed at arresting St Lucia’s unemployment problem and tackling what she calls bread and butter issues.

In presenting the Budget, Anthony touted the achievements of his administration in the last 12 months including a near four percentage point reduction in the country’s fiscal deficit.

However, with a deficit of $57.2 million, Rigobert says the government’s fiscal package does not inspire hope.

She says the fact that Anthony has already indicated how much revenue will be required to meet the salaries of public sector workers is a sign that the government intends to reduce the public service or cut salaries.
