Why juveniles are being held in adult prison... Bunting seeks to justify

KINGSTON, Jamaica:

National Security Minister, Peter Bunting, has sought to justify the holding of four juveniles being held in adult correctional facilities.

Bunting, contributing to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives today, said four boys are being held at the Horizon Remand Centre on Spanish Town Road in Kingston because of the high levels of risk they present to the juvenile population.

According to Bunting, the boys have been charged with serious offences such as multiple murders, and they have in the past set fire to the facilities.

The holding of juveniles in adult centres is in breach of international convention, but Bunting said the boys are housed in a separate building.

He said the boys are receiving educational support at Horizon as is the case at Metcalf Street where the majority of delinquent juveniles are held.
