Paul Burke resigns as social development commission head

People’s National Party General Secretary Paul Burke has resigned as the chairman of the Social Development Commission.

The commission operates out of the Local Government Ministry.

Yesterday, the Opposition issued a statement demanding Burke's resignation, citing what it calls a clear conflict of interest.

However, The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre understands that Burke tendered a letter of resignation to Local Government Minister Noel Arscott last week.

According to the Opposition, since its election, the PNP Administration has demonstrated that the Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller only pays what it calls lip service to principles of good governance.

Burke replaced Peter Bunting as PNP General Secretary on May 4.

A JLP affiliate last year called for Jennifer Edwards, who heads the PNP women's group, to step down as executive director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority.

However, Edwards remains the head of that agency.
