AUDIO: Greg Christie angers contractors

Published:Monday | May 19, 2014 | 12:40 PM

Contractors are accusing former contractor general Greg Christie of attempting to usurp the role of the country's legal authorities.

The accusation follows Christie's comments in relation to 84 works contractors who have been cleared of fraud allegations.

In 2009, the contractors were removed from the list of entities approved by the National Contracts Commission (NCC) following an investigation by the Office of the Contractor General then headed by Christie.

However, last week, Works Minister, Dr Omar Davies, told the Parliament that while the police concluded that there were errors in the registration, their actions did not amount to fraud.

Christie has since spoken out against the move to reinstate the contractors, noting that in all instances they made materially false statements on their application forms.

However, chairman of the Jamaica Association of Contractors and Construction Consultants, Percival LaTouche, says Christie should respect the decision of the police.

He says Christie cannot be judge, juror and executioner.
