MP calls for off peak discount for toll roads
South St Catherine Member of Parliament Fitz Jackson is suggesting that the operator of the Portmore leg of Highway 2000 introduce a reduced toll rate during off peak hours.
Jackson says this will help to make commuting to and from Portmore more accessible and at the same time generate additional revenues.
He made the appeal after officials from the National Road Operating and Constructing Company (NROCC) told yesterday’s sitting of the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee that there has been a falloff in the usage of sections of Highway 2000.
NROCC’s Managing Director, Ivan Anderson, said while off peak discounts is a good idea he’s doubtful this will happen.
Anderson told the committee that the operator has already looked at the proposal but it is not of the view that this is the best option at this time.
He also pointed out that there are already discounts for frequent users of Highway 2000.
