Smith and Campbell name Athletes of the Year

The Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA) today named athletes Maurice Smith and sprinter Veronica Campbell the 2007 male and female Athletes of the Year.

Smith became the first Jamaican to win a medal in the decathlon at a major championship. He took the silver in the men’s decathlon at the World Championship in Osaka, Japan.

Smith also became the only Jamaican to win a medal in the event at the Pan American Games. He won the gold with a Games record 8,278 at the Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Veronica Campbell was recognised for capturing gold in 11.01 seconds at the World Championships. She became the first Jamaican to win the 100 metre title at a World Championships.

Campbell also won two other medals, silver in the 200 metres, and 4 by 100 metre relay.
