Local Gov’t Reform

The Prime Minister, Bruce Golding has outlined several issues to be considered in the reform of Jamaica’s local government system.

He said the system which dates back to the 17th century needs restructuring to cater to the unique needs of the Jamaican people.

According to Mr. Golding, the lack of political will is among the factors affecting local government reform.

The local government body also needs to improve its level of responsiveness to the concerns of the people, he added.

Mr. Golding also said boundaries will be implemented to separate the role of the local government from central government. Since, the government is often brought into disrepute due to the confusion that exists as to the responsibilities of both forms of government.
