Golding to host CARICOM leaders
Prime Minister Bruce Golding is expected to host a number of Caribbean leaders tomorrow morning in Jamaica to coordinate CARICOM's efforts to assist earthquake-torn Haiti.
The disclosure was made by Information Minister Daryl Vaz ahead of the trip to Haiti yesterday.
Golding was accompanied by minister with responsibility for information, Daryl Vaz; Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller and other members of rescue-and-emergency agencies to Haiti yesterday.
With the Government's first-hand view of the devastation which had been wrought, Vaz said he would today be providing additional details on Jamaica's involvement in the rescue operations.
Lucea's mayor booted
The People's National Party (PNP) councillor for the Sandy Bay division in Hanover, Lloyd Hill, was removed as chairman of the Hanover Parish Council during a regular monthly meeting yesterday
The Gleaner understands that his six other colleagues - four PNP and two Jamaica Labour Party representatives - passed a no-confidence motion against the former mayor of Lucea in a move that was crafted in December.
His successor is his former deputy mayor, Fredricous Miller, PNP councillor for the Green Island division.
Hill's colleagues reportedly said that they were dissatisfied with his performance as chairman.
PM's pledges
Golding offered Jamaica to Haiti's President René Préval, as a logistic centre that would provide warehousing for other countries wishing to bring relief supplies.
Jamaica would be offering refuelling facilities and the use of the Reynolds Pier in Ocho Rios.
