With his eyes glued to kart No. 62, well known businessman, Mark Myers, flashed a broad smile immediately after his 12-year-old son, William, crossed the finishing line a winner in convincing style at yesterday's opening of the 2010 go-kart season.
"His success today is a combination of the hard work that he has been putting in. He will complete the local series, but the focus right now is the Grand National Finals in the United States," said Myers after yesterday's event at the Palisadoes International Raceway, Kingston.
The younger Myers, who is one of several karters who have been competing at the meets in Florida, led from start to finish in the first Rotax Mini-Max event, during the post-lunch period. He beat Thomas Issa and Fraser McConnell into second and third place, respectively.
According to his father, the meets in Florida have helped to transform him into a more confident and better driver.
Both Rotax Mini-Max and Rotax Junior Classes were run together.
Destroying the opposition
While Myers was destroying the opposition in the Mini-Max class, Matthew Williams and Colin Daley were locked in an intense battle in the junior class.
It was Daley who assumed the lead, then Williams went in front, as they raced bumper-to-bumper. But Daley fought back and regained the lead, a position he maintained until the end, to win the most exciting race of the day.
Among the other winners were Joshua Sirgany, who continues to looking impressive in the Rotax Micro-Max Class. Mike Simmons took a double in the Super Masters Class.
"It was quite a good day for us. We had some nail-biting finishes, especially in the Micro-Max Class," commented Peter Rae, president of the Jamaica Karting Association.
