The Editor, Sir:
I see that the revenue department has finally gotten serious about tax collection. The questions on the lips of most well-thinking Jamaicans are as follows:
1) What took them so long? It's not as if the Government has been rolling in revenue in the past. We didn't become the fifth most indebted country in the world last weekend.
2) Will these policies be implemented across the board without fear or favour? From the news, Elephant Man was held at the airport, but then allowed to go on his way. We hope this is because the revenue department either got some funds from him, or at least got a binding undertaking from his attorney-at-law that said funds would be delivered forthwith. So, hopefully, those prevented from leaving the island and having their property seized will not exclude high-flying entertainers, politi-cians, business people and socialites.
