The University of Technology's Nicholas Watson and MVP's Christine Day gave encouraging performances in their events over the weekend at the JAAA All Comers track-and-field meet at the National Stadium.
Watson had one of the best performances at the meet as the Intercollegiate 200-metre silver medallist looked quite good in winning the men's 100 metres. Competing in a negative wind of 0.6 metres per second, Watson stopped the clock at 10.17 seconds for the win.
High Performance Training Centre's Sanneh Suwaibou, who won his heat in 10.22 seconds, was second overall, while MVP's Leon Thomas finished third overall in 10.25 seconds.
Berlin World Championships 400-metre semi-finalist Day continued to show good form this season in the women's 400 metres.
Day clocked 52.20 seconds to get the better of three athletes from Racers Track Club. Shereefa Lloyd (52.39), Davita Prendergast (52.69) and Ristananna Tracey (52.98) occupied the minor places.
Utech shines
It was a good afternoon for athletes from the Paul Francis-coached University of Technology as Carrie Russell, Rusheen McDonald and Ricardo Cunningham also had good wins.
Russell continued her winning ways this season as she was best in the women's 100 metres, stopping the clock at 11.51 seconds for an easy win.
Mico University College's Trudy-Ann Richards (11.82) and Akan Track Club's Dorothy Smith (11.92) had to settle for second and third respectively.
Sprint Tech's Anastasia Leroy and Racers Track Club's Kemar Bailey-Cole were the winners of the women's and men's 200-metre events. Leroy won the female event in 23.80 seconds to get the better of Racers Track Club's Celia Walters, who was second in 24.09 seconds, with GC Foster College's Samantha Curtis taking third in 24.14 seconds.
In the men's half-lap event Bailey-Cole, who was impressive at the Jamaica International Invitational meet a few weeks ago in the 100 metres, showed his versatility by winning the men's half-lap event in 20.83 seconds.
Swept Track Club's Ainsley Waugh, who won his heat in 20.87 seconds, was second-best overall, while Bailey-Cole's team-mate at Racers Track Club Edino Steele was third overall in 20.92 seconds.
