PM assessing security threat
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller says she is assessing the current security threat to the island.
There have been reports of looting in some sections of the island.
Mrs. Simpson Miller says she is examining the situation with a view to taking stronger action.
The Prime Minister is also reporting that the security forces may not be able to go to the polls this week, as expected and she says there could be a postponement of the August 27 polls.
She also says several countries have pledged to assist in the relief effort. The United States is among the countries that have committed to helping.
She says she has summoned Cabinet ministers to an emergency meeting for tomorrow to further assess the situation.
Buildings damaged in Corporate Area
Meanwhile in the Corporate Area there are reports that the roof of the Manning’s Hill Girls home has blown off. The children have since been relocated by the Health Ministry.
Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, Ronald Jackson, says his team has received a report that a house, has collapsed in the Liguanea area of St. Andrew.
Portland roads impassable
In Portland there are no reports of loss of life however several roadways including Long Bay, Manchioneal and sections of Priestman’s River are impassable.
The ODPEM says it is unable to reach shelter managers in Buff Bay Valley, the upper Rio Grande Valley, Rock Hall and Fruitful Vale as the Digicel network is down in that section of the island.
