The Transport Ministry is insisting that there will be no roll back of the interim increases in toll rates on the North-South Highway.

The toll rates on the North-South Highway were rounded to the nearest paper note after a coin shortage created problems for the operators of the highway to provide change.

Parliament's Public Accounts and Appropriations Committee (PAAC) yesterday demanded that there be a roll back of the interim increase in light of an ease in the coin shortage.

The PAAC's demand came after it was informed via a letter from the transport minister that a decision was taken for the interim rates to remain.

In a release late last night, Permanent Secretary in the Transport Ministry Dr Alwin Hales said the temporary adjustments that were effected in April will remain given that the toll rate is set to be reviewed and adjusted in September.

Dr Hales contends that to return to the previous rates now then vary the rates again in six weeks will cause confusion and discontent among the motoring public.

The permanent secretary says the variation in September will take the interim adjustment into account.
