THE EDITOR, Madam:
Thank God that the 100m race for women did take place at the National Trials after the technical glitches that caused a delay. Congratulations to Shericka Jackson, Kemba Nelson and Elaine Thompson Herah for qualifying for World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. It was God’s grace and mercy that made the race happen.
But this was a poor showing. The undue delay to the start could have resulted in injuries to the athletes. Their best performance was also compromised.
We are happy for Shericka Jackson’s win, Kemba Nelson’s awesome performance, the discipline and patience shown by Elaine Thompson Herah, and also the young Briana Williams, who is a star in the making.
Apologies are in order to all the participating finalists, who had to go through these delays and thereby creating unfavourable conditions for their performance. The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association needs to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of these delays and ensure that such incident is not repeated.
