The Clarendon Municipal Corporation has launched a hurricane relief committee geared towards providing assistance to residents affected by Hurricane Melissa on October 28, as well as seeking additional aid.

May Pen Mayor Joel Williams made the announcement while addressing today’s monthly sitting of the corporation.

Many communities, especially in the Clarendon North Western and Clarendon Northern constituencies, were severely impacted by the hurricane, with some areas marooned and farmers losing all their produce in farming communities like Bog Hole, Aenon Town, and James Hill.

Disaster coordinator for Clarendon, Stacy-Ann Henningham, presented a grim assessment of infrastructural damage across Clarendon, noting that the Kellits Market, the Alley Bridge, and the Clarendon Infirmary also sustained extensive damage.

According to national assessments, Hurricane Melissa has inflicted catastrophic damage across Jamaica.

The Government says the losses amount to billions of US dollars, spanning infrastructural, agricultural, and other critical areas.
