Mary Jane’s* 12-year-old daughter has Down’s syndrome, is autistic and cognitively delayed, and will require medical care for the rest of her life. Determined to provide for her daughter’s future, the retired Jamaican entrepreneur, now living in the United States, had built a US$80,000 nest egg by 2021 to cover her future medical needs. She began exploring short-term investments as a way to increase her savings and that’s when a friend introduced her to Delta Capital Partners, Jane recounted during an interview with The Sunday Gleaner last Wednesday.

Jamaica eye rare men’s, women’s 100m U20 titles

For the past four World Under-20 Championships, Jamaican women have ruled supreme in the 100 metres, with Briana Williams winning gold in 2018, Tina Clayton claiming back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022, and Alana Reid taking the crown at the last staging in Lima, Peru. Jamaica have won the men’s blue-riband event on just two occasions, with Dexter Lee capturing back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2010.

PNP breaks silence on leaked audio

One week after a damaging audio recording became public, in which the voices of two alleged People’s National Party (PNP) officials could be heard discussing ways to discredit Major General Antony Anderson in his role as head of the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA), the party has broken its silence on the matter. The issue was the first item on the agenda at a meeting of the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) on Sunday. The meeting is usually the last such gathering before the party’s annual conference in September, provided there is a conference.

Hotel pipeline tops US$4.2b, but brand name projects face delays

Jamaica has facilitated more than US$4.2 billion in hotel investments through JAMPRO, but roughly 10 per cent of the pipeline remains delayed, including a Marriott-branded property in Trelawny. These projects – facilitated in the fiscal year that ended in March – are expected to deliver 8,943 new hotel rooms and create an estimated 25,705 jobs, according to Government of Jamaica filings this month to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. The investments are part of a broader effort to rebuild a sector disrupted by Hurricane Melissa last October.

Editorial | Who graduates high school?

This newspaper is clear: so-called ‘graduation” at basic, early childhood and primary schools are comic pastiches that embarrass and ridicule rather than enlighten. They falsely, and vicariously, celebrate accomplishments at the start of a child’s journey of education and learning, rather than at a point in the process where they have real, substantial and measurable outcomes to commemorate.
