NWA pushes to reopen Over River Bridge in St James for new school year

The National Works Agency (NWA) is reporting that it is fast-tracking plans to have the Over River Bridge in St James reopened to the public by the start of the new school year.

The bridge was washed out during the passage of Hurricane Melissa last October, disconnecting the Over River community from several surrounding areas, including Hurlock and Sign.

The NWA noted that the Sign roadway is a popular route used by residents to access Montego Bay city centre.

The disruption has forced residents to use alternative routes, increasing their travel time and transportation costs.

Community Relations Officer at the NWA’s Western Region, Janel Ricketts, in a statement on Wednesday, said work to repair and relaunch the bridge began in February 2026.

However, she said progress was delayed due to logistical challenges.

Despite the initial delays, Ricketts said work is now far advanced and the contractor is on track to meet the September 2026 deadline.

She said the bridge has been relaunched following its removal from the river.

She said steel members have been repaired and the structure otherwise fortified for continued use.

Ricketts said work will now focus on constructing the bridge’s abutment walls and ramps.

Residents are being advised that, during the period of work, pedestrians should not attempt to use the unfinished bridge.
