The Government has reported significant progress under its Restoration of Owner and Occupant Family Shelter (ROOFS) Programme, revealing that more than $5 billion in grants has been disbursed to Jamaicans affected by Hurricane Melissa.
This was disclosed by Minister of Information Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon at today’s post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.
She said the administration had allocated $10 billion to the initiative, which is being administered through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
Under the programme, affected householders are eligible to receive $75,000 for minor roof damage, $200,000 for major damage, and $500,000 for cases classified as extreme damage.
Morris Dixon said the Government is “very proud” of the programme, noting that following the assessments, the authorities moved swiftly to process and disburse payments, particularly in western Jamaica and other hard-hit sections of the island.
She added that the structured tier system was designed to ensure fairness and timely support to families in urgent need of assistance, as recovery efforts continue across communities impacted by the hurricane.
