The Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) was represented at a recent international technical exchange in Bogotá, Colombia, focused on best practices in the design and operation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs). SAJ’s General Manager, Terrence Brooks, participated as part of the Jamaican delegation during the February 23–27, 2026 visit.
The mission brought together representatives from the Government of Jamaica and technical partners to gain first-hand insights into the successful operation of free zones, with a particular focus on the internationally recognised Zona Franca Bogotá. The exchange was organised within the framework of a consultancy supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), aimed at strengthening the development and strategic positioning of Jamaica’s Caymanas Special Economic Zone.
During the visit, the delegation toured the facilities of Zona Franca Bogotá and engaged with key stakeholders from Colombia’s business and institutional ecosystem. Discussions explored a range of operational and strategic areas, including free zone governance, security and information systems, investment promotion, and strategies to support near-shoring in response to evolving global trade patterns.
For the Shipping Association of Jamaica, participation in the exchange provided valuable exposure to international best practices that can help inform Jamaica’s approach to developing a modern and competitive SEZ environment. As an organisation representing the interests of the maritime and logistics sector, the SAJ continues to support initiatives that strengthen Jamaica’s role as a regional logistics hub.
Brooks noted that the experience provided important insights into how established free zones operate and collaborate with industry stakeholders to drive investment and economic growth.
The knowledge gained through the exchange is expected to contribute to ongoing national efforts to enhance the Caymanas SEZ and further position Jamaica within global supply chains and international trade networks.
