Glenmuir High School players in a celebratory mood.

GLENMUIR HAVE one foot in the semi-finals of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition following a comprehensive 4-0 win over last year’s beaten finalists, McGrath, yesterday at Glenmuir.

Glenmuir picked up another three points to lead Group A with six after their 3-2 win last Saturday over Garvey Maceo. With this latest defeat, McGrath suffered their second loss of the quarterfinals, having also gone down 0-2 to Cornwall College on Saturday. With zero points, they have now been eliminated from the daCosta Cup.

In what was a must-win for McGrath, they found themselves on the back foot very early as Orel Miller put the home team ahead in the fifth minute of play. Corey Nicely doubled Glenmuir’s lead in the 33rd minute, sending them into the halftime break up 2-0.

At the restart, with the writing on the wall, McGrath tried desperately to get back into the contest, but the home team ensured that they had no chance. Miller scored his second goal in the 50th minute to extend the lead to 3-0 before top marksman and skipper Orane Watson put the icing on the cake, scoring in the 83rd minute to break his three-match goal drought and seal the commanding 4-0 victory.

Head coach Andre Peart was pleased with his team’s display.

“The boys turned up today and they were very positive from the start as they showed a lot of energy. We have one foot in the semi-finals, and we will not take our feet off the gas as we have some four days to go. It is all about recovery for them now,” said Peart, whose team has now eliminated both finalists from last year’s competition.

Three quarterfinal games are on in the daCosta Cup today, with high stakes for Kemps Hill, who, having lost their opening game, face off against Cornwall College with elimination looming.

Cornwall, in Zone 1 with Glenmuir are second on three points but will want to keep pace. That game takes place at Glenmuir High School.

With everybody on a point in Zone 2, Christiana High have every chance of keeping themselves in it when they play against St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) at Manchester High. However, they play against a STETHS team, who while on a point, have been playing the kind of football that suggests that they are contenders this season.

Clarendon College had to work to get into the quarterfinals, and now that they are here, they haven’t found the going any easier but will be hoping to get things right away against a dangerous Dinthill Technical. All games begin at 3 p.m.
